In preparation of Billy Joe Saunders’ overdue return to boxing, we will look ahead of his fight next weekend headlining the Cardiff bill on Boxnation. He will be making his first defence of his WBO Middleweight Title against Artur Akavov.
Since defeating Andy Lee almost a year ago on points, injuries and other complications have led to a painful year of inactivity for Saunders and his return in Cardiff isn’t exactly the comeback we were all hoping for. There has been various names thrown in the mix by his promoter Frank Warren, the likes of a Chris Eubank Jr rematch, a Gennady Golovkin unification or a defence of his title against Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez.
Artur Akavov should be dealt with swiftly in impressive fashion next weekend if Saunders wants any chance of being taken seriously by the superstars he seems to be chasing. The fact he has the only belt Golovkin hasn’t got is a massive bargaining tool but some awful price demands have made it difficult for K2 promoter Tom Loeffler to come to any terms with Warren.
Billy Joe was penciled in for the first defence of his WBO Middleweight Title against Max Bursak but the fight fell through when Saunders suffered an injury in his hand. Providing he comes through next Saturday quite convincingly, there will be no hiding from the big fights now as there will be plenty of people chasing that belt of his.
