After being level with Anthony Joshua as the most called out fighter in the sport, Gennady Golovkin seems to be coming close to finalizing a deal with Danny Jacobs in March 2017. Jacobs is the WBA Regular Middleweight Champion, and Golovkin being the WBA Super, IBF & WBC Middleweight Champion.
The fighters were in talks after Golovkin knocked out Kell Brook, to fight on December 10th but due to Jacobs feeling like the wasn’t ready and needed a longer training camp, the discussions fell through. Talks also came to a halt when Jacobs couldnt agree on a purse split for the fight, thinking he was due more than the split offered from GGG’s promoter Tom Loeffler. The fight has gone to purse bids and as mandatory Challenger, he will be getting a 25% split in the purse.
Jacobs boasts a good knockout ratio on his record with only one professional loss in his career at the hands of Dmitry Pirog 6 years ago when he was knocked out in six rounds. If the fight cant get made, one of these two will have to vacate their belt as the fight has been ordered by the WBA but with Golovkin seeming to want to fight anyone and everyone in the Middleweight division, I cant see him loosing his belt. But the talks commence and the fight seems still possible for March 2017, I’d have Golovkin going in as a big favourite!
