Last month Nathan Cleverly stopped Juergen Braehmer in a bizarre stoppage to take his WBA Regular Light Heavyweight Champion and become a two time champion. Cleverly was previously a Light Heavyweight World Champion before getting knocked out by Sergey Kovalev and having his belts taken away from him.
The fight was in Germany and Braehmer started off well but Cleverly started on coming strong before Braehmer didnt make it out his corner and quit on his stool. He walked over to Cleverly’s corner to shake his hand and revealed he had suffered an elbow injury, meaning he could no longer carry on and Cleverly was crowned the new WBA Regular Light Heavyweight Champion. Since Andre Ward’s victory against Sergey Kovalev last weekend, the Light Heavyweight division is open to new challengers and there is certainly some exciting fights on the horizon.
However Braehmer is getting on a bit now, and will soon be looking to throw in the towel on the sport and hanging up his gloves. Cleverly’s promoter Eddie Hearn has said a rematch between the two is easily made, and its what him and Cleverly have both been chasing. With that being the case, its a matter of when not if, as an opportunity to reclaim the titles he has lost will be on the top of Braehmer’s agenda as he probably feels there is flaws to Cleverly’s game that he could expose. I cant see Braehmer travelling to Wales to fight in Cleverly’s back yard so the rematch in Germany probably makes more sense financially.
