Tony Bellew has had many names thrown in the mix for his next fight, more recently against David Haye, but before Bellew goes any further he will need to be taking on his challenger undefeated Latvian danger man Mairis Briedis.
If Bellew wants to keep hold of his WBC Cruiserweight belt, there will be no running from this fight. Bellew has said he has his eyes on a unification clash against either IBF & WBA Cruiserweight Champion Denis Lebedev or undefeated Ukranian WBO Cruiserweight Champion Oleksandr Usyk. In his way is Briedis and theres no hiding away from it, the money in this fight isn’t big at all. However that is one of the problems in modern day boxing, the best wont fight the best unless theres money on the table. Briedis is high risk and very low reward, but Bellew has said he will be negotiating a fight with the Latvian for his next fight.
Bellew has been on very good form undeniably in his last few fights, the level of opposition in BJ Flores is questionable but he still dealt with him in quick fashion and was the first man in Flores’ career to defeat him by stoppage. Prior to this Bellew knocked out hard hitting Illunga Makabu at Goodison Park earlier this year winning the vacant WBC Cruiserweight Championship, but Tony is 33 now and gettig towards the end of his peak. To chase these big unification clashes and the money fights he will need to keep hold of his belt to have all the bargaining power that Eddie Hearn, his promoter will need.
