Since becoming the unified Light Heavyweight Champion, Andre Ward has been a big centre of attention recently with many calling for him to fight Golovkin, but Andre Ward says that ship has sailed.
Ward against GGG would be an absolute mega fight, a huge masterclass of two great amateur boxers, and two of boxing’s best undefeated fighters in the sport right now. Andre Ward is the IBF, WBO and WBA Light Heavyweight Champion, and Golovkin is the WBC, IBF, & WBA Middleweight Champion. GGG isn’t a huge middleweight so going all the way straight up to Light Heavyweight seems a big ask, but I doubt Ward would be very negotiable as he says he has email proof of a contract sent out to Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 promotions, to which they never accepted.
Ward offered GGG a 50/50 split purse with an offer that both fighters would have a tune up fight, and then meet in 2016. To which apparently Golovkin’s side said they didn’t want to fight until 2018 as they wanted to unify the division. With Golovkin being one of the most called out men on the planet, he is sure to be in some big fights next year if he wants to stay on the good side of his fans.
