Undefeated Latvian Cruiserweight Mairis Briedis 21-0-0(18ko’s) is the mandatory challenger to Tony Bellew’s WBC Cruiserweight Title, but with Bellew’s recent announcement against David Haye at heavyweight, It’s left the belt situation up in arms. Briedis’ advisor has said that they will be chasing the WBC to enable them to fight for the vacant belt and have Bellew stripped.
Briedis advisor Al Siesta has said that he wants the belt to be freed up and wants to challenge IBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck who recently defeated Dimtry Kucher by unanimous decision. Huck is still a huge draw in Germany and brings in massive numbers by fighting on terrestrial television so the fight makes more sense for Briedis as the exposure and the purse he would get over there would be just what he needs to his career to really take off .
Both Huck and Briedis fancy challenging Bellew and Bellew’s promoter Eddie Hearn has said that he will try and ask the WBC if they can be excused for one fight, and then come back to defend against Briedis afterwards. The fight is scheduled for March 4 2017 against David Haye so that would be quite a while for the Latvian to wait. I’m sure there will be an announcement soon.
