After Andre Ward has revealed him and his team sent Gennady Golovkin a 50/50 split offer at 168lbs and it was turned down, Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler has hit back and said that is officially incorrect!
Ward was questioned recently on whether he thinks a fight with GGG could be made and he revealed they had sent him offers before but the pair couldn’t come to an agreement as GGG wouldn’t take the fight until 2018. He also said that when Golovkin turned down the offer, they decided to move up to 175lbs to fight Sergey Kovalev, which took place two weeks ago and resulted in Ward winning by unanimous decision.
Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler has said that it’s completely untrue. He said they had big plans for 2016, with taking on Billy Joe Saunders and fighting Canelo Alvarez, however they did not expect both fighters to duck Golovkin and go down other avenues. A Fight between the two could be possible but Golovkin would have to jump up two weight divisions to fight at Light Heavyweight, and made a slight dig at the attendance from the fight stating that it would be a definite sell out.
I think a fight between the two will probably never happen, with Ward having his eyes set on moving up to heavyweight, however true that is. Golovkin is getting called out from all angles, and has a few other options to get through first so a fight against Andre Ward seems pretty slim.
