Two years ago Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr met in the ring putting both of their undefeated records on the line with the very prestigious British Middleweight title, the Commonwealth title and the European Middleweight titles on the line. Saunders won the first half of the fight and although coming on strong in the second half, Eubank Jr didn’t do enough to sway the judges and lost via split decision.
Ever since the fight the two have developed a hatred between them, always calling each other out and hurling abuse at each other via social media and every televised opportunity that they get. Saunders went on to defeat Andy Lee to win the WBO Middleweight Title and Eubank vacated his chance to fight for a world title against WBA Regular Middleweight Champion Danny Jacobs.
There is a lot of fake rivalries in boxing to try and make more excitement for the fights, but the hate these two men have for each other is all real. When Nick Blackwell faced Eubank Jr earlier on this year, Saunders had accompanied him to the ring, whilst holding the British title that Eubank challenged him for, also walking over to Eubank Senior and getting in his face.
The two have talked about a rematch ever since, but its not quite clear who is stalling the negotiations. Eubank Jr says Saunders is bottling it, whereas Saunders says Eubank Jr doesn’t want the fight. Billy Joe’s promoter Frank Warren has confirmed he had sent multiple contracts to Eubank to which he had no response.
If this fight is likely to come off, the pair would be meeting on Boxnation’s new deal with BT Sport on pay per view, and it would be huge. This goes beyond the stake in the ring, this is a family feud which genuinely means everything to both men.
