WBO Light Middleweight Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez has had a tough 2016. Despite becoming a world champion again, there has only been one thing fans want to see, and that’s him step in the ring with the undefeated king of the middleweight division Kazakh Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo has always made it known he would fight Golovkin, but it would be on his terms. Despite being the former WBC middleweight champion at 160lbs, he wanted to drag GGG down to 155lbs, which isn’t too much of an ask however its irrelevant if they both fight in the 160lb weight division.

Much talk of the fight falling through has been pointed towards Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya who seems to be ducking the fight more than Canelo is himself. After Canelo dispatched of Amir Khan in 4 rounds, GGG joined him in the ring to call him out and Canelo responded telling him they will call him in the morning, and start the negotiations.

Time and time again after rumors were speculated about who offered who what, it came to the surface that Canelo had said to Tom Loeffler of K2 promotions, Gennady’s promoter, the fight can take place, however they want to give Golovkin a flat fee of $10m. As lucrative as an offer this is, the fight will generate mega money and a flat fee of $10m is going to be a small percentage, and in turn the offer was turned down.

Fans are still critical of GGG for turning this offer down and rightly so, Canelo is already a massive superstar, Golovkin does have all the tools to cement his legacy in the sport but is yet to have a career defining fight so taking $10m which would be his biggest payday yet against the biggest draw in world boxing would be some fighters dreams, but it does look to be like K2 are holding out for a percentage split.

Whilst all of this is going on behind the scenes, Canelo has taken the abuse at full force from all angles. Mexican fans have started to turn on him, hall of fame fighters have criticized him and current fighters have been heavily critical. He’s a superstar whether he wins or looses, and has now said in 2017 this fight is his priority.
