Over in Russia 37 year old defending champion Denis Lebedev has lost via split decision to undefeated 23 year old Murat Gassiev.
Gassiev dropped Lebedev with a vicious body shot in the first third of the fight but the Champs experience enabled him to come back stronger and put in a performance that made for a great fight, with credit to both men. I had Lebedev three points ahead at the end of the fight, however a Gassiev win was granted as it was close per round. The score card of 116-111 didn’t portray the performance Lebedev put on but as his WBA title wasnt on the line, he still has plenty of options in the division as he is still a world champion in a different governing body.
Credit to Gassiev on his lack of experience compared to Lebedev’s, both men shared tremendous heart and it was a very entertaining fight. In my opinion Lebedevs work was slicker and his punches seemed to be the more cleaner but Gassiev cut off the ring very well and looked the aggressor most of the fight.
Also on the card saw Eduard Troyanovsky suffer a shocking first round knockout defeat to Julius Indongo for the IBF Super Lightweight Title, giving him his first professional loss. Troyanovsky came into the fight a 1/25 favourite so the upset was not expected at all but it’s always exciting to see a big underdog upset the apple cart.
