Since 2015 both Billy Joe Saunders and Canelo Alvarez finished their years with massive credit and a very exciting 2016 ahead, however both have had pretty pathetic years and have really sucked all the fights fans wanted to see.
Billy Joe Saunders went on to have almost a year of inactivity and then to face unknown Russian Artur Akavov, who gave BJS big problems and caused a massive wake up call. Canelo bought up Amir Khan two weight divisions and knocked him out after getting outclassed on the cards for the first few rounds. He then also vacated his 160lbs belt to move down to face undefeated WBO Super Welterweight champion Liam Smith, knocking him out also.
Since defeating Andy Lee and becoming the new WBO Middleweight champion there have been plenty of hopefuls trying to get their hands on his belt with Chris Eubank Jr and Gennady Golovkin extremely eager for the opportunity.
Due to Saunders inactivity, the WBO have ordered he must face two mandatory challengers before having any voluntary defences or unification clashes, and the first mandatory challenger the WBO have ordered is Canelo Alvarez.
After BJS’s last performance it’s clear he needs another tune up fight before he steps in with world boxings biggest face but knowing Frank Warrens relationship with the WBO, he might get lucky. Nevertheless, this is a fight we would expect to be a routine title defence, just hopefully it ensures the winner will have to face the undefeated Kazakh Middleweight King Gennady Golovkin.
