Ever since the return of the Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao’s 6 month short lived retirement from boxing, many names have been surrounding him as he is one of the very few fighters left in the sport that could give a fighter life changing money.
We last saw Manny in action when he returned to defeat Jessie Vargas by unanimous decision to become the WBO Welterweight division to become an 8 time world champion and with it being an extremely competitive division, there seems to be a lot of high risk, low reward fights for Manny compared to what he is used to.
A fighter who has been chasing his breakout fight into superstardom is undefeated American fighter and WBO, WBC, The Ring & Lineal Super Lightweight champion Terence Crawford 30-0-0 (21ko’s). Crawford is one of the hottest fighters on the planet and is in most people’s top 10 p4p rankings.
Both fighters are promoted by Top Rank and legendary veteran promoter Bob Arum so the conflict of interest regarding the politics should be almost non existant, however after coming public on the situation Pacquiao’s agent has said they would take the fight, but with a $20 million guarantee.
Behind Floyd Mayweather, Pacquiao is the second highest paid boxer in history and is used to getting paid some extremely generous cash and with age not on his side, the 38 year old only has a few fights left in him, so ensuring they are all relevant is vital to him.
Pacquiao has recently stated he could still make 135lbs easily when hinting at a potential blockbuster fight with Ukrainian king Vasyl Lomachenko so it’s unaware if he would drag Crawford up to 147lbs, or go down to 140lbs and try and take the belts at Super Lightweight.
Crawford is a huge draw in his hometown and is undoubtedly a star in the making and Manny is also still one of the biggest names in the sport, but a $20 million guarantee doesn’t seem likely against a fighter who hasn’t stormed the numbers in his PPV event against Viktor Postol, a fight with huge demand in the division.
I personally think Manny doesn’t want to take the risk against Crawford and knows a $20 million purse isn’t likely and will look to unify the division up at 147lbs but either way, there is definitely still other options for both fighters.
