Ohara Davies has been one of Matchroom boxing’s bright prospects for a while now and he is not shy of the trash talk. Ever since his unanimous decision victory over Andrea Scarpa last November, one man has been giving him agg, ‘Dirty’ Derry Mathews.
Ohara has an impressive record of 14-0-0 (11ko’s) aged just 24, whereas Derry, aged 33 has a record of 38-11-2 (20ko’s). The pair have been going at it for a while now on social media and tension has continued to boil, but Davies’ promoter Eddie Hearn has now revealed he has made an offer to Mathew’s team and he wants to put it on the undercard of David Haye v Tony Bellew on Sky Box Office March 4th.
Davies is however next in line to face the British Super Lightweight champion Tyrone Nurse so it’s unclear whether Ohara will fulfill his mandatory spot, or bring up Mathews from lightweight to face him.
I feel Hearn probably thinks Mathews is hanging around for the next few paydays and could be a test for Ohara that could prove successful, whereas a clash against Tyrone Nurse would be a tricky one. Also now Nurse is fighting on Boxnation that will make things difficult.
For now though, the war of words will continue and the verbal sparring over social media will continue to bubble in the saucepan whilst the politics behind it all will unravel itself and by next week we should have the announcement.
Definitely a step up in class of opponent for Ohara but I think boxing fans would still have him as a comfortable favourite.
