The highly anticipated rematch between Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz has ended with Cruz becoming the new WBA & WBC Diamond featherweight champion as Frampton’s undefeated record is ruined.
Frampton won the last fight pretty conclusively as Santa Cruz looked extremely frustrated and lost for ideas. However this time around with his father back in his corner, you could argue a strong case it was a closer victory than the scorecards suggest.
The scores read 114-114, and 115-113 x2 for Santa Cruz. Frampton never looked like he was going to be in deep water, he just looked like he couldn’t close the gap.
Santa Cruz was keeping Frampton at range and boxing incredibly on the back foot. His jab continued to win him the rounds and he picked apart the counter punches with incredible timing, making Frampton work hard when he didn’t want to.
Frampton said in his post fight interview that his camp was good. Going into the fight, he felt that he was in incredible shape and he would be walking away the 2-0 champion, however, he admits the right man won on the night.
The pair have agreed to a trilogy, with both wanting to get the rematch on. It was a clear Santa Cruz victory as he used an incredible boxing brain and showed us the talent we have previously seen in his career, but let’s hope when they get it on next that they bring it to Belfast!
