Current British super middleweight champion and WBC mandatory challenger Callum Smith will finally be granted a shot at the prestigious green and gold strap as he faces Anthony Dirrell for the vacant belt. He will not however be staging the event at his beloved Anfield.
The undefeated Smith has a record of 22-0 (17ko’s) has been one of the hot prospects in the UK for the last 2 years but over the last 6 months has digressed drastically. He was set to face the winner of James DeGale v Badou Jack however the fight ended a draw, followed by Badou Jack’s vacation of the title.
Smith’s promoter Eddie Hearn had big plans to stage the fight at Anfield, the stadium of Liverpool football club. A shocking $1.6 million bid was put in by TGB Promotions who will promote the fight on behalf of Al Haymon.
This is a comical mistake from Eddie Hearn who has spent years ranting and raving about the success that Callum Smith will bring and often stating he will be the next star of the division. Only for him to go and loose the purse bids and have the title fight on away soil!
No date or venue is yet to be confirmed.
