The IBF have today announced that if no one will face Beterbiev in an eliminator, the Russian will be the mandatory challenger to the winner of Andre Ward v Sergey Kovalev II.
The IBF announced earlier this week that he would get a mandatory position to face Andre Ward for the IBF title, however Main Events CEO Kathy Duva stated the talks are underway for the Ward v Kovalev rematch so Beterbiev will be involved in an eliminator.
He was set to face Sullivan Barrera however contracts presented a stumbling block between the two sides and they could not agree on putting pen to paper. Barrera stated he would not invest any more money into training costs without signing a contract to fight.
Beterbiev is one of the hottest fighters to keep your eye on in the sport of boxing, and with a record of 11-0 (110ko’s) he brings excitement. Not only his professional record that makes him a top talent, but he was also in a fierce competitive rivalry with Sergey Kovalev in the amateurs.
“The IBF is aware that Barrera refused to fight with Beterbiev. Right now we are going down the ratings and if no one agrees to fight with Beterbiev, then he will become the mandatory challenger to fight with the winner of the Ward-Kovalev rematch,” an IBF press officer stated to Basil Konov.”
